My mother once lamented my family culture doesn't include nifty names for things. Where other people might call their car "pyewacket" or "Dragon Wagon," my family tends to call our cars "the blue car" or "the Honda" or "the truck." I don't have sweet nicknames for my husband, and the ones he has for me he also uses for the dogs. (Except "fuzzybutt." He won't do that twice!) So you'd think I wouldn't be so surprised when people choose practical names for things. Earlier today I invited a friend to breakfast with me, and he said that he couldn't because it's the season for the Baha'i fast. I thought to myself, "I wonder what this season is called?" I googled it. It's called "The Fast." Gets right to the point, that does. Admirably so! |
